Aakash Chopra Tips Washington Sundar as Potential World Cup Wildcard

23 August, 2023

Cricket pundit Aakash Chopra has suggested that Washington Sundar might emerge as a wildcard entry in India’s World Cup squad, provided he performs well in the final T20I against Ireland in Dublin on Wednesday, August 23.

Sundar’s initial performances in the series have been lackluster, going wicketless in the first two T20Is and facing just one delivery. He was notably omitted from India’s Asia Cup squad and is currently part of the Asian Games contingent. Follow your favourite cricket team with attractive betting odds from Nextbet.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra underlined the importance of the third T20I for Sundar. He pointed out that the Asia Cup squad lacks an off-spinner, stating that although Sundar was discussed, he ultimately wasn’t selected. Chopra said, “So this could be a change, there can be a wildcard entry.”

Chopra believes that Sundar could become a compelling option if he excels both with the ball and the bat. He remarked, “If he picks up wickets with his off-spin and scores runs whenever he gets to bat… then Washington Sundar – tempting option.”

The commentator also noted that the Indian team seeks off-spinners when facing numerous left-handers in the opposition lineup. He mentioned that regardless of the captain, the Men in Blue rarely employ left-arm spinners against left-handed batters.

Regarding potential changes to India’s playing XI for the final T20I, Chopra expressed a preference for continuity, especially since India has secured the series. He emphasized, “Play with the same team because after this T20, the next T20 will be after two-and-a-half months against Australia after the World Cup.”

Chopra highlighted the scarcity of T20Is in India’s schedule, except for the Asian Games. He urged the team not to miss this opportunity, especially as the World Cup is on the horizon.

Most of the Indian squad for the Ireland series will also participate in the Asian Games, with exceptions such as Jasprit Bumrah, Sanju Samson, and Prasidh Krishna. Chopra noted that Tilak Varma, who is part of the squad, might need a replacement if he makes it to India’s World Cup squad. Get free cricket betting tips from Nextbet Sports.
