Manchester City stepping up their interest for Bayern defender

19 April, 2023

Manchester City and Bayern Munich were involved in one of the most talked about exchanges of the winter transfer window. Joao Cancelo, the star fullback from Portugal, left Pep Guardiola’s club to join Bayern Munich after an apparent falling out with the manager. Now, there are new reports suggesting an even stunning bit of news.

Manchester City, who let go of their star fullback, are expecting to get Bayern’s star fullback in return for the upcoming season. Canadian fullback Alphonso Davies, who is one of the fastest footballer in the world, is on the radar for Guardiola, who according to the Spanish coach is the perfect replacement for Cancelo after he eventually completes a full move.

Guardiola has used four centre-backs in his backline of late, favouring Nathan Ake at left-back. While it has allowed City to widen the pitch with a naturally left-footed player on that side, enabling Jack Grealish to invert on that side, it is not seemingly a long-term fit that could benefit the club, especially the one filled with such huge ambition.

Davies, however, would enable City to play with an overlapping full-back – though the Bundesliga star is capable of inverting to attack, too. With Guardiola always looking to revolutionise his side ahead of the curve, he could switch the dynamics of his team sooner rather than later.

As one of the quickest players in Europe, too, City could possibly have the fastest Premier League star, should they sign Davies. Currently, the quickest player in the division is Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez.

Real Madrid are set to rival City for the Canadian’s signature, having still not replaced Marcelo. Ferland Mendy is their first-choice left-back – but with the Frenchman injured of late, midfielder Eduardo Camavinga and centre-back Nacho have both stepped in as makeshift replacements.  Davies is valued at €70m by Transfermarkt but clearly, Bayern Munich might command a price way higher than that to let go of their star player.

City are currently having a 3-0 lead against Bayern heading into the Allianz Arena for the second leg of their quarterfinal clash. Visit Nextbet and find more fresh stories about Manchester City.
